Local Anaesthetic and Inhaled Analgesia

Local Anaesthetic

  • The non scalpel Vasectomy uses an advanced local anaesthetic technique that is very effective in anaesthetising the scrotum.
  • Lignocaine is used to block branches of the genitofemoral and ilioinguinal  nerves (sensory nerves of scrotal contents).

Inhaled Analgesic

  • All patients for Vasectomy are anxious to some extent. This is a normal reaction.
  • We use now Penthrox ("the green whistle").
  • The Penthrox inhaler, manufactured and marketed by Medical Developments International (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) is a hand-held inhaler device which can be used for the self-administration of methoxyflurane for excellent pain relief.
  • This is not an anaesthetic but a very short acting analgesic
  • Penthrox is used by the ambulance service, medical practitioners and sporting clubs.
  • Penthrox makes the procedure virtually painless.
  • Patients are able to leave immediately if they have someone to take them home
  • Patients are able to drive home after assessment by Dr Elvy to make sure they have fully recovered. (usually 90 minutes following cessation of Penthrox use)

  • We sub specialize exclusively in
    • Non scalpel open ended vasectomy.
    • Phlebology & Ambulatory venous surgery of the lower limb
